Advocacy in Action

Members of this Committee work closely with League Leadership and leaders of other advocate organizations to advocate and lobby year-round on behalf of the League agenda. Members support the advocacy work of LWVFL.
Grassroots League membership statewide determines specific legislative goals within various national and state policy issues each year. Under the direction of the League of Women Voters Florida Board of Directors and with guidance and input from the League’s professional lobbyists and League Issue Chairs, advocacy volunteers make the League’s voice heard loud and clear in every county on a year-round basis.
When the Florida Legislature begins its annual 60-day Session, the Tallahassee League’s Local & State Advocacy volunteers have a ringside seat. We are often called upon to support Florida League activities in and around the Capitol.

We know your volunteer time may be limited so we have different opportunities depending upon your interest and degree of involvement, including:

-
Help Prepare and/or Distribute League advocacy literature at tabling events;
-
Visit and educate Legislators regarding League positions and priorities;
-
Attend the Leon County Delegation annual meeting to speak to or stand in solidarity for League positions and priorities;
-
Write letters to Senators and Representatives in response local, state, or national League Calls to Action
-
Stand in Solidarity at rallies, marches, and press conferences;
-
Pen opinion editorials with approved content;
-
Attend fellow-advocate education and advocacy activities and events.
Everything we say and do is carefully orchestrated to assure the League speaks with one consistent voice. Thus, orientation is provided to all Local & State Advocacy volunteers. Every year during General Session the State League holds Lobby Days in Tallahassee. This is an additional training opportunity to learn the art and science of League Advocacy, and to meet fellow advocates from around the state.
Please join us as we spread the message; the next Legislative Session is always “right around the corner!”
