Private school voucher expansion and the organization behind the curtain. September 22 – 6:00 PM – via Zoom
The League of Women Voters has long opposed the expansion of private school vouchers with no transparency or accountability. CS/HB 7045 signed by Governor DeSantis last May greatly expands the voucher program, and has been expanded even further to include students who attend public schools requiring masks to prevent spreading Covid 19.

This Hot Topic will focus on a report produced by the Tallahassee League’s public education task force investigating Step Up for Students, a private SFO (Scholarship Funding Organization), that manages and promotes Florida’s expanding voucher program with little oversight. Step Up is one of the largest charities in the United States that few have heard of.

President Sally Butzin chaired the Task Force and will present its findings. Now retired, Dr. Butzin is the founding President and Executive Director of the Institute for School Innovation in Tallahassee. Among many awards and recognitions, she was named “Distinguished Educator” by the Florida State University College of Education in 2008. Her latest book is Creating Joyful Classrooms: A positive response to testing and accountability in the elementary school(Rowman & Littlefield, 2018). She is a frequent guest columnist on education issues for the Tallahassee Democrat newspaper.
