Education Committee:

The education committee follows education issues of interest to the League of Women Voters. At present we are focused on local issues but we also try to keep an eye on state and national developments educational as well.

The members attend the meetings of the Leon County School Board. We would like to expand or abilities to monitoring the District Advisory Council as well.

Individual members monitor important websites such as those of the Leon County School District, Florida Department of Education, and the Federal Department of Education. Searching the Web for information on education is a never ending job and we would appreciate having additional members to help us to that.

During the Legislative Session the Education Committee helps the Lobby Core to follow legislation that effects education in Florida and Leon County. Last Legislative Session (2010) we worked to defeat Senate Bill 0006, which the League determined was not well crafted and not in the best interests of education in Florida. As March draws ever nearer we will be following bills and attending committee meetings where education is being legislated. This year will be particularly interested in legislation that may be generated in connection with the Race To The Top (RTTT) federal grant, which we are currently studying, especially as it affects Leon County Schools.

The Committee meets once a month to discuss the issues and plan for the future.

Our members are friendly, our discussions are lively, and there is much to be done to keep up with the changes. If you are interested in education and would like to work for the League's goals in that area, please call (893-5013) or email (mlbaker@fsu.edu) M. L. Baker, Chair of the Education Committee for League of Women Voters Tallahassee.
