Report from the Local Education Study and Action Committee
Members continued planning for the upcoming National Education Study Consensus, to be completed by November 30. We have scheduled two Consensus sessions for Tuesday, November 8 in Room A at the LeRoy Collins Public Library. The first session, from (approximately) 2:00-4:30, will accommodate those for whom evening times are inconvenient, and the second, from 6:00 - 8:30PM, for those who cannot meet in the afternoon. All League members are strongly encouraged to participate in one of these sessions.
The consensus meeting at the library will begin with brief presentations on: History of Public Education in the United States, Common Core Standards and Assessments, and Equity and Funding. League members unfamiliar with these issues should refer to 'From National: Common
Core Standards' published in the August Voter and 'The Federal
Government's Role In Public Education: Equity And Funding' in this
Voter. Both of these articles are available in full at the National League website:Additional
books, studies and articles are likewise available there, including the
valuable 'Leaders' Guide for the Education Study.'We
encourage you to prepare for the consensus meeting by reading some or
all of these documents recommended by the national League.
The Tallahassee League Education Committee is particularly pleased that our
invitation to Carolyn Herrington, Professor of Educational Leadership
and Policy and Director of the Educational Policy Center at the Learning
Systems Institute at Florida State University will address League
members at our 'Hot Topics' Luncheon on October 19.
Detailed planning for the Consensus Meetings
to be held on November 8 will continue by the
Education Committee on Tuesday, October 4 at 1:00 PM.

Transportation Study
At the September meeting of the
Transportation Study Committee, we decided that the focus of our study
would be the joint city-county project called "Moving Tallahassee: Cars
Optional," and the scope of our study will be the West Tennessee Street
Transit Pilot Project.
Our next meeting, also in September, was
held at Marilynn Wills' house where we met with Charlene Walker, who
had been our guest speaker at the Hot Topics Luncheon earlier the same
day. Charlene has vast experience in transportation studies and we were
able to ask her specific questions about how to conduct our own
transportation study. The following was determined:
1. We should send information
collected in our research (interviews, etc.), including who we met with,
to Charlene either throughout the research process, or when we complete
our research, but before we work on consensus.
2. The two consensus questions we are to ask our League may change
before we take consensus. The questions are evolving, based on
information Charlene receives from local Leagues about their study
results.
3. While we are looking at a specific transportation project, we are
also to find out about how transportation planning works in general: how
decisions are made, where funding comes from, etc.
4. Our main purpose is to find out where in the transportation
planning process the League can make a difference, i.e., influence the
process, in order to make the League position actually happen.
5. Our next step is to set up appointments, starting with Harry Reed.
Mr. Reed was the guest speaker at our August Hot Topics Luncheon. He is
the Executive Director of the Capital Region Transportation Planning
Authority.
